One innocent villager killed after abduction by UPDF in Laxmichari
On 8/01/2006 one innocent villager was killed after kidnapping by UPDF armed cadres in Laxmichari upazila under Khagrachari district. It is reported that at mid-night an armed group of UPDF led by Ratan Basu Chakma alias Joy (30) s/o Dulal Basu Chakma of Dilyatali village and Laxmi Chakma (28) s/o late Taruni Mohan Chakma of Golachari under Laxmichari upazila conducted operation at Bengmara village under Laxmichari upazila in Khagrachari. They looked for PCJSS member Mr. Kala Baran Chakma there and kidnapped two villagers from the following village:
1) Mr. Juddha Mohan Chakma (25) s/o Breja Chakma
2) Mr. Lajya Chakma (26) s/o late Shanti Chakma.
Next day (on 9 January) Mr. Lajya Chakma was killed at Battala of same village in front of some villagers and ordered villagers to cremate dead body. Other person Mr. Juddha Mohan Chakma was taken to more remote area and Taka 2,00,000/- was demanded as ransom for releasing him. On that day, Taka 60,000/- have been paid by his relatives to UPDF cadres. After paying all the money, he was supposed to release.
On 11/01/2006 same group of UPDF attacked again at Bengmara village. During the attack, they had beaten up Ms. Jali Chakma (50) w/o late Shanti Chakma. She is mother of Lajya Chakma and mother-in-law of Kala Baran Chakma (PCJSS member). She was ordered to present her son-in-law Mr. Kala Baran Chakma before them otherwise Taka 3,00,000/- have to be paid to UPDF. Fearing further attack, she left village for safe area. One villager named Shanti Chakma of Bhijakijing under Laxmichari upazila protested against this inhuman act. With an aim to kidnap him (Shanti Chakma), the UPDF cadres rounded up his house on 22 January. Shanti Chakma was not home at that time. Then UPDF cadres had beaten up his wife and ordered her to present her husband before them. The UPDF cadres seized all the property (movable and immovable) of Shanti Chakma till he is presented before them. The village committee of UPDF was bestowed to look after this property.
The same group of UPDF kidnapped two Bengali labouerers who engaged construction of bridge from Durang Para under Sindukchari union under Mahalchari upazila. They demanded Taka 2,00,000/- as ransom.
